Pannonhalma wine region

The Pannonhalma wine region is among our oldest wine regions, spread over 1,100 hectares on the slopes of the Pannonhalma mountains. Its climate is cool but balanced over the year: mild winter and moderately warm summer. The region receives lots of sunshine and the distribution of the rain is favourable. All of these factors create ideal circumstances for the production of quality white wines, as it has been for centuries. Loess and .pannon deposit. based brown forest soil characterize this region mixed with sandy soil in some areas.

Grape varieties / wines:

The white wines produced in the area have strong character, high extract level wines like: Olaszrizling, Rajnai rizling, Tramini, Rizlingszilváni and in the last couple of years Sauvignon blanc, Chardonnay, Cserszegi f.szeres and Szürkebarát.

History:

The Benedictine monks settled down here in 996 and St. Stephen.s letter of foundation for Pannonhalma (written in 1002) is already mentions the grape and wine producing in this area. The residents of the monastery made viticulture flourish here. They were directing all the vineyard owners in this area by the 13th century. At the time of the Turkish occupation the development broke and the area became uninhabited since the army path to Vienna crossed the region. After the Turkish left the country, an upturn came again and wine production gave security for the people untill the 19th century. Afterwards, the phylloxera killed 80% of the plantations. With the new plantations the Olaszrizling became the leading grape variety. The recent decades have brought revival to Pannonhalma, which became an independent wine region in 1980.
