Mór wine region

The 1,300 hectares Mór wine region consists of six settlements: Mór, Csákberény, Csókak., Pusztavám, S.réd and Zámoly. Due to the ditch at Mór (Móri árok), which is located between Vértes and Bakony, this region has a special microclimate. The summers are not too hot, autumns are long and warm and the winters are moderately cold, the risk of frost is very rare. The sunny hours and the volume of the rain is average also. The loess based brown forest soil and sand give home to the grape-vines.

Grape varieties / wines:

Fiery, acidic, high alcohol level and tasty wines are made of the following varieties: Ezerjó, Leányka, Tramini, Chardonnay, Rizlingszilváni, Rajnai rizling, Zöld Veltelini, Irsai Olivér, Királyleányka and Ottonel muskotály.

Settlements:

Csákberény, Csókakő, Mór, Pusztavám, Söréd, Zámoly

History:

On the slopes of the Vértes mountain the Romans started grape growing first, then the Hungarian conquerors in the 10th century found a flourishing viticulture. The development of the region came to a sudden stop when the leaving Turkish burned down Mór and the vine-yards around Mór were razed as well. Around 1690 came an upturn again due to the Capuchin monks settling down here. Probably they introduced Ezerjó wine in this region. The German settlers, arriving in the 18th century, have also made lots of contribution for the preservation of viticulture. The phylloxera did less damage here, than in other places due to the sandy and the sand-loess mixture soil, as well as to the hard work of the people working here. The area still reminds wine fanciers of the Ezerjó but since the '60s other varieties are increasing in significance.
