Most European languages have acquired their word for the drink from the Latin „vinum”, which has later become: win, wine, win, vin, vino, vina in different European languages. Also, Ancient Greek „oinos” might be a source for these words. The Hungarian word „bor” for wine originates from ancient times of Hungarian history and from the shamanic religion of ancient Hungarians. According to assumptions, the word „bor” might be the first Hungarian word which has been archived. Interestingly it has been archived by the Chinese. (During those ages, the forefathers of today’s Hungarians were an equestrian people wandering in Central Asia.) At this stage, the word referred to Bor Tengri, the divine spirit of dawn and twilight, literary to the spirit of transformation and rebirth.
The word „bor” became linked to divine features and acquired a sacred meaning, which enabled it to describe the features and abilities of the fermented grape juice, wine.
According to beliefs in the ancient world (also in Greek and Egyptian culture), a drink which is capable of such transformation, which becomes more noble, desirable, and euphoric in effect, must possess divine abilities, and thus must be appropriate for communicating with the Gods. Therefore, the wine became the drink of the Gods in the ancient cultures.
